The Decimal System

Did you know that Indians came up with the concept of decimals? India was the first to express all numbers using ten symbols. Each symbol had an absolute value, paving the way for advanced calculations and practical use of arithmetic in inventions.

The Binary System

Computers wouldn't be possible without binary numbers, and we have Indians to thank for it! The binary system revolves around the number 1 and 0. They represent bits and bytes, creating the foundation that computer programs use. The first example of binary numbers comes from the Vedic scholar Pingala.

Rulers

Believe it or not, the earliest examples of measuring rules come from India. Excavations at Harappans sites unearthed marked rulers made out of ivory and shell. Surprisingly, the rulers are pretty accurate. The calibrations are similar to the hasta increments used in ancient Indian architecture.

The Heliocentric Theory

Mathematicians throughout history used their knowledge to make predictions about the universe and planetary alignment. Take a look through ancient concepts about space, and you'll see that some of the ideas were pretty far fetched.

However, one famous Indian mathematician, Aryabhatta, correctly predicted that Earth was round. He also calculated that the Earth rotates on an axis and revolves around the sun. Thus, the Heliocentric theory was born!

Plastic Surgery

A textbook from the 6th century BC provides comprehensive descriptions of ancient surgery. Not only does it mention common ailments, plant remedies, and preparation techniques, but it also goes into detail about plastic surgery. For example, it talks about the reconstruction of the nose, which is what we call a modern rhinoplasty!
