How to Storm-Proof Your Roof

Nature is unpredictable, but your roof should not have to be. Precautions can keep your roof secure during a storm. So, prepare for storms with these 10 roof storm preparedness strategies.

  1. Check for Damaged Shingles and Leaks

Shingles should be flush and provide a tight seal. So, look out for missing, bent, or curled shingles. If you detect any missing or damaged shingles, call your local roofing contractor.

While inspecting your roof, look for additional issues. For example, water might enter your home trough damaged flashing. Thus, examine the flashing surrounding the chimney, dormers, and vent pipes.

Also, remove mold, moss, and leaf piles, which may absorb moisture and ruin your roof.

Aside from broken or missing shingles, look for evidence of water damage or leaks. They can compromise your roof integrity. Likewise, unchecked leaks may damage your roof besides your walls, electrical wiring, and insulation.

  1. Cleaning Gutters

Gutters protect your home by diverting rainfall away from it. If your gutters are clogged with leaves and other debris, water will overflow onto your roof’s soffit and fascia. Likewise, unchecked overflow causes moisture damage. Keep your gutters as clean as possible.

  1. Trim Trees

Even if your roof is in great shape and can weather a storm, trees may inflict severe damage to it.

Additionally, strong winds may tear trees apart and send limbs soaring onto your roof. Cut or trim any nearby trees to fight this menace.

Examine your yard for dead, broken, or large tree limbs. So, hire a professional tree trimming service.

  1. Remove or Secure Outside Objects

Nobody wants that a storm blows away their stuff. What’s more, nobody wants them to smash their home and causing damage. In bad weather, loose things in your yard might fly around.

So, bring indoors any plants, patio furniture, lawn ornaments, etc. before the storm arrives. Also, fix heavier or bulkier things to the ground. Remember to park your car in your garage.

  1. Close Doors and Windows

Houses sustain internal and external pressure. If you leave a window open and something flies through it, the outside pressure forces its way inside. Now, your house is like a hot-air balloon. In this case, the roof is the parachute.

Thus, cover your windows and doors with plywood to strengthen them.

  1. Schedule an Evaluation

Schedule a professional examination if you have any concerns about your roof or home's integrity. Experts will tell you what to repair and how to prevent storm damage.

  1. Check Your Insurance

Before your roof suffers major damage, review your insurance coverage, and make required changes. If you don't have enough coverage, talk to your insurer about your choices.

Besides, keep your insurance documents secure and after the storm passes, you will have your insurance documents at hand.

  1. Perform Regular Maintenance

Nobody likes to discover a leaky roof just before a storm.

Regular roof inspections maintain your roof in peak shape and ready for the worst. This preparation will save you time and money during hurricane season.
