Revisiting the Khalil Mack trade Why Rai

Two things made Bears general manager Ryan Pace smile at the annual NFL meeting in March. The first was Sporting News presenting him itsaward for 2018. The second was the Moritz Wagner Jersey mere mention of the Khalil Mack trade.

Of course, the deal he completed with the Raiders on Sept. 1, 2018, just eight days before Chicago'sseason-opener, was chief among the reasons Pace's peers voted him the winner of SN's annual award. Mack, 28, was named first-team All-Pro for his work in 2018, and the Bears flexed the NFL's best defense in points allowed. Everybody was a winner.

"The happiest people in the building was probably our secondary," Pace told SNregardingthe deal for the pa s-rusher. "It kind of jolted our team at the right moment."

We should rephrase; not everybody Lagerald Vick Jersey was a winner. Everybody in Chicago won when the Bears traded for Mack.

There were no winners in Oakland.

Raiders coach Jon Gruden, who engineered the Mack trade, recently told The Athletic he "" after the deal. His team went 4-12 last season while Mack helped the Bears win the NFC North for the first time since 2010.

Gruden was reminded of that pain all week as he prepared to face Mack and Chicago for the first time since the trade, as the Raiders were scheduled to play the Bears in London on Sunday. Which makes now a Austin Davis Jersey good time to revisit the Mack trade.

Khalil Mack trade detailsBears received: Edge-rusher Khalil MackRaiders received: 2019 first-round pick, 2020 first-round pick, 2019 sixth-round pick, 2020 third-round pickWhy did the Raiders trade Khalil Mack to the Bears?

In short, the Mack trade was the result of a holdout that lasted through Oakland's offseason program, training camp Sherman Douglas Jersey and preseason. Mack was entering the final year of his rookie contract and was scheduled to earn $13.84 million in 2018. The No. 5 overall pick from the 2014 NFL Draftknew he deserved to be paid like one of the NFL's best defenders on a long-term contract.

Gruden, who had been hired to coach the Raiders earlier in the year, evidently on a deal that would pave the way for Mack's return to the team. The Rams had just signed Aaron Donald to a record contract, which raised the price tag on Mack.

"That pretty much set the stage of what it was going to be," of Donalds deal and its J.T. Thomas Jersey impact on the Mack trade. "And $90 million guaranteed is an astronomical number. It's phenomenal, I think, for the players. Great for him, obviously. But that was something we could not do."

So the Raiders began to shop Mack, and they got plenty of offers. The Packers, for example, "were aggre sive" in their offer for the pa s-rusher. But their division rivals were even more aggre sive.

"I think, ironically, the Raiders took the Bears offer because they thought they would be a better draft pick,"Green Bay president and CEO Mark Murphy .

After Chicago made the deal with Oakland, it signed Mack to a six-year, $141 million contract with $90 million guaranteed, making Mack the NFL's .

Khalil Mack trade: What did the Raiders getfrom Corey Davis Jr. Jersey the Bears?

In exchange for Mack, the Bears sent the Raiders a couple first-round draft picks, one in 2019 and one in 2020, a sixth-rounder in 2019 and a third-rounder in 2020. Quite the haul.

The 2019 first-round pick the Raiders got from the Mack trade ended up slotted at No. 24 overall, and Oakland drafted Alabama running back Josh Jacobs. The team packaged the 2019 sixth-rounder Grant Fogerty Jersey in another trade.

Including the other first-rounder they got in the Mack trade, the Raiders are sitting on two first-round picks in the 2020 NFL Draft.

In our latest , Sporting News has the Raiders (who will be the Las Vegas Raiders D'Shawn Schwartz Jersey at that point) selecting Clemson linebacker Isaiah Simmons and his teammate, wide receiver Tee Higgins, with their pair of first-rounders.

Who won the Khalil Mack trade?

The easy answer is the Bears. Gruden to talk about the tradefor a reason.

"We wanted to have him," Gruden told reporters this week."We couldn't make it happen."

Consider the following: Since the trade last year, Mack has played in 18 games; he has 17 sacks, 10 forced fumbles and Navy Midshipmen Jersey Sale a touchdown.

In the same time, the Raiders have played 20 games; their entire defense has recorded 18 sacks, 8 forced fumbles and 2 touchdowns.

As mentioned, the Bears with Mack fielded the league's No. 1 defense in points allowed; the Raiders without Mackfielded the league's worst defense in points allowed.

"No matter what nobody says, we tried to overcome it," Raiders tackle Donald Penn after the season."But when you trade your best player away in the beginning of the year, it takes a toll on guys. Whether they say it Chase Harler Jersey or not. We fought through it. We tried to stay together. It was a tough season."

To be fair, the ripples of the Mack trade are still flowing. Jacobs is a promising player, and the Raiders will hope their 2020 first-rounder from the Bears will turn into another Pro Bowl-caliber player.

But in this case, a Pro Bowler isn't good enough. Oakland ditched the 2016 NFL Defensive Player of the Year when it traded Mack. Replacing him has proven and likely will continue to prove impo sible.
