If you are going to bring a pet to live with you in an apartment, you will have to be careful about the unit you choose. Not all apartments will allow you to keep a pet in them with you. And the few apartments that do allow this are often going to charge you a pet deposit and they will often charge a bit more each month in rent for having the pet there. You will need to expect that the deposit for having the pet will be between $200 to $500 and the extra rent that you will pay each month will be between $120 to $600. 

Even when you find a landlord with a pet-friendly rental, you will need to come up with money for a deposit. This deposit is there to cover any of the potential damages that your pet is going to cause. Just like with your security deposit, you will be able to receive this money back as long as there is no damage or any losses to the property. You may lose some of it to help cover the services for cleaning up the apartment after moving out to make it good for the future tenants. 

Pet fees, on the other hand, are similar to the deposits above, but they will be nonrefundable. These can range anywhere from $200 to $500. You may also be charged a monthly pet rent, which will vary based on the unit that you decide to rent out at the time. Not all rental agreements are going to ask you to pay more per month to have a pet, but some do, so take the time to check this out and see how much it is before you agree to sign the lease. 

Keep in mind that there could be some differences if your pet is a trained service dog. The ADA and the FHA will prohibit landlords from charging this fee for a service dog, though the rule does not extend out to an emotional support animal, so it is important to know the difference.
