    This part of the valve effectively works in the opposite way to the piston. As the thermostatic element contracts as heat decreases, the return spring will move the piston back through the inlets for the hot and cold water flow, increasing the amount of hot water and decreasing the amount of cold water, keeping the overall water temperature constant.

    Aside from the shell, this is the part you can see and control. Often shaped like a dial, this allows you to increase or decrease the heat of the water. This manually moves the piston, changing the ratio of hot and cold water flow.
