Tried These Sleep Experts Previously? You Really Should!

Remember that waking up during the night is completely normal for young babies, and you shouldn’t feel pressure to try and get your baby to sleep for longer. In order to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), safer sleep should be the priority instead of longer sleep. This may be difficult for exhausted parents, but it is vitally important that safer sleep is followed for all sleeps, day and night. Co-sleeping with baby is very much a personal choice so we would just advise you to read all the information on safer co-sleeping so you can make an informed decision. That way even if you decide not to co-sleep you can make your bed a safer place for your baby if you doze off accidentally. Naps help prevent your child from becoming overtired. Being overtired can affect your child’s mood and overall temperament. Adequate sleep – including the optimal amount of nap time – improves your child’s mood. Shush or rock your infant back to sleep instead of nursing him. (But again, be sure to gently jostle him awake when you put him down.) Babies may change when they nap as they grow, so their schedules may shift. Once the new schedule becomes clear, stick with it. It is more common for babies to be around a year old before they sleep all through the night. Your lack of sleep won’t last forever.

Don't try to keep your baby awake for longer – it's tempting to try and keep your baby awake in the hopes that this will encourage them to sleep for longer, but usually this just results in an overtired and grumpy baby that won't sleep3. For the first 6 months your baby should be in the same room as you when they're asleep, both day and night. This can reduce the risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome). Particularly in the early weeks, you may find your baby only falls asleep in your or your partner's arms, or when you're standing by the cot. A bedtime routine helps your child recognize time-to-sleep signals and physically helps their body to get ready for the night. Keeping interaction calm and lights low at night is crucial to keep them ready to go on sleeping without waking up completely. Teething is a condition when the baby develops its first set of milk teeth. In this phase, the infant might experience some pain, mild bouts of fever, diarrhea and increased sleep regression. A particularly painful teething process can mess up the sleep schedule. You might need to book an appointment with a pediatrician. Having a baby is a steep learning curve and aspects such as sleep training come along and shake things up just when you're not expecting them.

There Is A Light On The Horizon

Our babies snooze in such short dribs and drabs, it’s hard for us to get any solid sleep. And even if your baby dozes for three hours, by the time you fall asleep you’ll probably only clock in two good hours. This may be survivable for a few nights, but as the weeks pass, sleep deprivation can cause profound exhaustion and can trigger a host of serious problems—from marital struggles to depression to car accidents to obesity. Bedside sleeping is when your baby sleeps in a bedside cot. This allows you to be close to them without sharing the same bed. The idea is that the bedside cot attaches securely to your bed, at the same level as your mattress with the side next to you open. Then you can reach out to your baby without the bother of getting out of bed. Newborn babies will wake up to be fed. Your baby will sleep for 1 to 3 hours until their next feed. Their sleep time gets longer as they get older. Their tummy influences their body clock. Your baby will stay happier, fall asleep faster, and sleep longer when you start his naps and a bedtime routine before he’s yawning and glassy-eyed. Your best hope of masking noise disturbances and guiding your groggy little sheep back to sleep is with strong white noise. Hissy fans and ocean waves may have worked during the first few months, but they often fail to soothe older infants with greater curiosity and bigger discomforts. If you're looking for a compassionate, effective and evidence-based approach to sleep or just advice on one thing like ferber method then a baby sleep specialist will be able to help you.

Despite being sold by many well-known brands, items such as cushioned sleeping pods, nests, baby hammocks and anything that wedges or straps a baby in place can pose a risk to babies less than 12 months of age. Families should be encouraged not to use sleep aids and if they do make this choice, to check whether items comply with British Standards and follow safer sleep advice. When coaching parents who are shifting from bed sharing to putting their baby in the crib at night, it’s important that they see the entire picture. Sometimes a parent needs to keep some sleep associations in the beginning of coaching (e.g., feeding to sleep), and then once baby is finally sleeping in the crib, they work on less night wakings. Invest in blackout curtains, as reducing light exposure helps the brain release melatonin and keeps baby’s internal clock in rhythm. Babies are too young to be scared of the dark, so they really don’t need a nightlight. Of course, you might need one, so you don’t trip when you’re in baby’s room. British researchers reported that most bed-sharing babies had their mouths and noses covered with bedding at some time during the night. A third of the sleeping moms also accidentally rested an arm or leg on their babies. All babies change their sleep patterns. Just when you think you have it sorted and you’ve all had a good night’s sleep, the next night you might be up every two hours. A sleep expert will be with you every step of the way, guiding you on how best to find a solution to your sleep concerns, whether its 4 month sleep regression or one of an untold number of other things.

Waking Up During The Night

Try not to hold, rock or feed your baby until he falls asleep, or be inconsistent with his bedtime routine. Instead, put him to bed when he's drowsy but awake, which will help him learn to fall asleep on his own. A good bedtime routine consists of regular and calming activities for your baby. Babies may find baths very relaxing and this can help your child before you put them to bed. If you live with your partner or another adult, make a plan together of how you will both fit in rest, as well as time with the baby. It's easy for new parents to make the mistake of waking a sleeping infant — or intervene too fast with an infant experiencing momentary wakefulness. And that can interfere with the development of mature sleep patterns, hindering babies from learning to settle themselves. Sleep problems may happen with illness. Talk with your baby's healthcare provider if your baby begins having trouble going to sleep or staying asleep, especially if this is a new pattern. If you need guidance on gentle sleep training then let a sleep consultant support you in unlocking your child's potential, with their gentle, empathetic approach to sleep.

Tuning into your baby's natural biological rhythms—by reading her telltale drowsy signs—ensures that when she's placed in her crib, melatonin (the powerful sleep hormone) is elevated in her system, and her brain and body will be primed to drift off with little fuss. Starting solids early won’t provide big babies or small babies with extra nutrition. Nor will it make your baby sleep through the night. Introduce solid foods when your baby is about 6 months old. Before you had kids going to bed was a forgettable event. Now bedtime is a glorious nirvana that you fantasize about throughout the day. Bedtime is also really important to your baby or kid. Bedtime that is too late, unpredictable, or inconsistent can set you up for a long slog of a night. Some kids go from overtired to totally wired really fast. And once they cross the line, they get revved even more and struggle against sleep. So check your wake/sleep diary and try to put your infant down thirty minutes before you think the yawning will start. Then, set up a great bedtime routine. And don’t forget that an early bedtime will boost your baby’s sleep. Night crying pulls on our heartstrings. And of course, we often jump right up because we don’t want the entire household to wake (and we hope to lull our little one back to sleep before he fully wakes). There are multiple approaches to sleep regression and a sleep expert will help you choose one that is right for you and your family.

All Babies Are Different

Over the coming weeks and months, you’re going to gently teach your baby he is loved. You can start right away by using the best cues that help him drift off to sleep and give him the confidence to slumber securely and fall back to sleep when he wakens. However, you’ll do it in easy baby steps, so his faith in you grows and grows. Focus on figuring out how your newborn likes to sleep. As long as they are not able to flip over, swaddling is generally considered safe, although you should always check with your pediatrician to make sure they recommend it for your child. Changes in your child’s sleep routine are difficult to predict, and periods of sleep regression can strike at any age, be it 4 months, 10 months, 12 months old or beyond.
