WotLK Mass Bans

The pre-patch for Wrath of the Lich King Classic went live on the servers last week, but the expansion has been marred by a lot of drama and intrigue that started with long waits. This coincides with Blizzard Entertainment's massive ban on World of Warcraft players allegedly AFKing on the Battlegrounds of Altarak Valley. Because many of the banned players immediately attempted to appeal their bans, Blizzard was forced to investigate these suspensions in detail for trading WotLK gold.

After careful investigation, Blizzard's Warcraft developer Pasolax published a blue post on the subject yesterday. The developer admitted to finding an error in the game's analytics data that was causing many players to be incorrectly banned, and shared Blizzard's plan of attack for those cases.

"We recently found an error in our analytics data that casts doubt on some of these bans, which is why we are reverting the bans," the developers write. "Others were so egregious that we are confident that failure to participate in these actions will remain valid, although some of them will be curtailed if they are first-time offenders."

Most importantly, Pazorax discussed the factors triggering the ban, including various indicators, including lack of participation in ongoing battles and regiments. Because there are no metrics that can provide a definitive answer, Blizzard not only uses those metrics to make decisions, but reviews all situations relevant to the case.

Blizzard also revealed that WOTLK Classic will feature a new battlefield. Considering that the current deactivation system appears to be obsolete, the developers will be revamping their old and new battlefield deactivation system, which may go live with the release of WOTLK Classic.
