Garment steamers come in three different sizes: commercial floor-standing models commonly found in dry cleaners, mid-sized models for small businesses or homes, and the latest innovation, the handheld garment steamer, perfect for travel and quick touch-ups.
Larger, more traditional garment steamers typically have a variety of features, including a temperature dial, steam nozzle, water tank (or tanks), hangers or hooks, casters, and crease clips. Because of their small size, handheld steamers often don't have all of these features. Still, they are the more popular offerings given their ease of use and portability.
In general, steam engines all work the same way. When the appliance is turned on, the water in the reservoir is heated, which creates steam. The device can then be swept over the garment, and the hot steam removes any unwanted wrinkles.
steam machine and iron
You might think that a steamer sounds very similar to an iron (dry iron). Although they are very similar and both are used to remove wrinkles from clothing, there are some key differences between them.
The iron uses a hot soleplate to press against the fabric of the garment to remove wrinkles. The pressure and heat flatten and stretch the fabric, allowing it to retain its new, wrinkle-free shape as it cools.
At the same time, the steamer uses hot steam that does not need to come into direct contact with the clothes. A steamer loosens the fibers of your clothes instead of putting heavy pressure on them like an iron, which helps prevent burns and is also gentler on your clothes.
Garment steamers and irons certainly have many advantages and disadvantages, but in general, they are both valuable in different ways and in different situations. Delicate materials such as silk are best ironed with a dry iron. Water (including sweat and perfume) has been known to damage silk or cause fading.
