The National Football League reigns supreme if we concentrate on the American scene. Nearly half of all sports wagers are placed on the NFL, with the Super Bowl being the most widely bet-on sporting event of the year.
A record-breaking £158.6 million in bet were placed on the 2018 Super Bowl LII, in which the Eagles upset the Patriots, at Nevada sportsbooks. The previous year's Super Bowl LI wagering record of £138.5 million was shattered by this astounding sum.
These are, of course, merely the official (legal) numbers. The American Gaming Association calculated that the actual amount wagered was probably in the neighbourhood of £4.76 billion.
February Madness
One of the highlights for both sports fans and bettors is the NCAA tournament. In one month, 68 teams compete against one another in seven single-elimination rounds in an effort to win the title of national champions.
According to data from the American Gaming Association (AGA), wagers on the 2018 NCAA men's basketball tournament would total more than £10 billion. Only 3% of that total was most likely lawfully wagered.
However, £300 million in total bets on one single event is insane given that only one state allows gambling!
