What are the Natural Attractions to see During a Berlengas Ferry Trip?

Berlengas trip

The Berlengas Islands welcome you all year round with events and sights whether you are looking for the ideal half-day trip or a more leisurely day trip. When visiting this well-known location, regardless of when you go, it is crucial to plan ahead. Several boat companies provide a ferry service from Peniche Marina to Berlenga, the largest island in the group, during the summer season, which runs roughly from the end of May to mid-September.

It is probably a good idea to make a reservation online or purchase a ticket in advance from one of the cabins at the marina if you are visiting during busy times. Read and know about some of the biggest natural attractions that you can see during a Berlengas trip by ferry.

Reserve for Nature in Berlengas

Due to the significance of its distinct ecosystem, the Berlengas archipelago was designated as a Nature Reserve in 1981. The diversity of its underwater archaeological past, its relevance to botany, and a number of island and marine habitats are all included. The Reserve covers 9,500 hectares overall, including the nearby body of water.

The common murre (Uria aalge), one of the typical birds in the Berlengas, is shown in the logo for the Berlengas Reserve. This bird, which nests on these islands, has a penguin-like appearance. You can take in all this natural beauty, as well as access to over 100 botanical species and a variety of bird species, thanks to the islands' 2 km of marked trails. The Berlengas were designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2011.

Praia do Carreiro do Mosteiro Beach

The Mosteiro dos Jerónimos (Hieronymites Monastery), which was built here before the So Joo Baptista Fort in the 16th century but was repeatedly attacked by pirates, gave the beach its name. The beach is also referred to as Praia da Berlenga Grande, and it is located closest to the pier from which boats leave for Peniche. It is the most central beach on the island. Because of the natural cove's tranquility and stunning surroundings, the crystal-clear waters are frequently calm. Despite not being as sandy, the island has two additional recommended beaches. These two beaches are Praia Cova do Sonho and Praia do Forte, which is the one by the fort.

Several endangered plant and bird species and a nature reserve can be found on the entire island of Berlenga. This is why you should not deviate from the paths that are clearly marked. Visit this website to book a tour to Berlengas in Portugal.
