The following guidelines will help ensure that dyeing is an interesting and enjoyable activity. When using powders such as calcium, lye, or indigo, please wear a mask. It is recommended to wear gloves when dyeing, as the alkalinity of indigo vats is strong. Some of the formulas recommend the use of alkali, as alkali has strong corrosiveness and can cause skin burns when exposed. Alkali should be considered a harmful substance. It is not recommended to use lye freely in a home studio. When mixing powder with water, be sure to add the powder to the water. Never add water to the powder. Completely separate the pots and utensils used for coloring from the items used for cooking. Clearly label all containers and substances. Store dyes and chemicals separately and away from food. Harmful substances such as lye should be stored in a locked cabinet. Be careful of pets and children.
Indigo vat
After the indigo dissolves, the dye solution turns yellow green. At the top of the barrel, air oxidizes indigo to produce blue indigo pigment. The bottom of the cylinder is a sediment composed of undissolved indigo, reducing agent, or alkali.
How to dye with indigo (
what is indigo)
1) Scour the fabric or yarn.
2) Build your bucket.
3) Dip in cloth or yarn.
4) Oxidized fabric or yarn.
5) Final washing of fabric or yarn.
Scour fabric or yarn
Proper washing is absolutely necessary for good dyeing. Improper washing of items results in low dyeing levels, poor penetration of dyes, and poor friction and rubbing fastness of dyed items. The difference between erosion and non erosion may be significant.

Indigo flowers fall on the water surface.
We include detailed instructions for each type of bucket in each recipe. Here are some useful information for all cylinders.
Heat can be used to start a large barrel or restore it later, but the indigo barrel does not need to maintain heat. This gives you more flexibility in choosing your vat in terms of containers. If using plastic containers, you can use immersion heaters to provide heat. If you use gas or electricity for heating, of course, you need to use a stainless steel pot.
