Non-Segmental Vitiligo - What is it, all you need to know about

What Is Non-Segmental Vitiligo

Non-segmental vitiligo is a chronic skin condition characterized by the loss of skin pigment, resulting in white patches on various parts of the body. It is a type of vitiligo that does not follow a specific pattern or distribution and can affect any area of the body, including the face, hands, feet, and torso.

The exact cause of non-segmental vitiligo is not fully understood, but it is believed to be an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing the pigment melanin. Several factors, including genetic predisposition, environmental triggers, and autoimmune dysfunction, may contribute to the development of non-segmental vitiligo.

Types Of Vitiligo

Vitiligo is generally categorized into two main types: non-segmental vitiligo and segmental vitiligo.

Non-Segmental Vitiligo:

Non-segmental vitiligo is the most common type and accounts for about 90% of all cases.

Segmental Vitiligo:

Segmental vitiligo is less common, accounting for about 10% of cases.

It typically affects a specific segment or area of the body, such as one side of the face or one limb.

Segmental vitiligo tends to occur at a younger age and progresses more rapidly than non-segmental vitiligo.

Unlike non-segmental vitiligo, it does not have a symmetrical pattern, and the patches may develop on only one side of the body.

Focal Vitiligo:

Focal vitiligo is characterized by a small number of white patches that are limited to a specific area of the body.

Mucosal Vitiligo:

Mucosal vitiligo primarily affects the mucous membranes, such as the lips, inside the mouth, and genital areas.

Universal Vitiligo:

Universal vitiligo is a rare and severe form of vitiligo where depigmentation occurs extensively across the body, including the majority of the skin.

Symptoms of Non-Segmental Vitiligo

The main symptom of non-segmental vitiligo is the presence of depigmented or white patches on the skin. These patches can occur anywhere on the body and vary in size and shape. Here are some common symptoms associated with non-segmental vitiligo:

· White Patches

· Symmetrical Distribution

· Common Sites

· Hair Color Changes

· Sensitivity to Sunlight

· Psychological Impact

It’s important to note that the course and progression of non-segmental vitiligo can vary from person to person. Some individuals may experience stable patches without much change, while others may notice the spread of patches over time. If you suspect you have vitiligo or notice any depigmented patches on your skin, it is recommended to consult a dermatologist for proper evaluation and diagnosis.
