How to change the ice maker on a Samsung refrigerator

Posted By Anton Turov     November 23, 2023

Body

To change the ice maker on a Samsung refrigerator, follow these steps:

Step 1

Check if the ice maker needs to be defrosted, that is, if it has any ice around it. If so, put the refrigerator in forced defrost mode.

To put it into forced defrosting mode, press the energy saving and refrigerator buttons at the same time for about 8 seconds.

After 8 seconds, the screen will go blank. Press the Refrigerator button 4 more times to reach the Fd option, which is the forced defrost mode. Then let the refrigerator defrost for about 5 minutes.

To take the appliance out of forced defrosting mode, press the same buttons again, at the same time, for about 8 seconds. Then press the Fridge button once to return the screen to normal.

Please note that the combination of buttons you need to press depends on the Samsung refrigerator model you have. Therefore, please refer to the user manual for instructions - best appliance repair.

Step 2

Unplug the refrigerator from the outlet or turn on the circuit breaker if you cannot reach the outlet. Be sure to do this for every repair you want to do on any refrigerator.

Step 3

Remove the ice cube tray by grabbing the bottom, lifting it slightly and pulling it out carefully. Some older Samsung refrigerator models have levers or buttons that must be pressed to remove the ice tray.

When you remove the ice cube tray, you can see if there is excess ice around the ice maker. If there is, defrost it by leaving the refrigerator door open for some time. Do not use any heat source to defrost the ice so as not to melt the plastic parts inside the refrigerator.

Step 4

Remove the cable housing cover by unscrewing the Philips screw securing it. Then push the cover a little towards you and remove it.

Now, pull out the ice maker wiring from the side of the compartment, press the locking clip and remove the wiring harness.

Step 5

Using the Philips screwdriver, remove the Philips screw from the ice chute tray. Once the screw is removed, move the tray to the side with the screwdriver and pull it down to reveal the bottom of the ice maker.

With the bottom of the ice maker exposed, check to see if there is a coil there. Some models have this special cooling coil, so if it is there, make sure there is no ice on it. If there is, let it thaw before touching it.

Be careful when moving it so as not to puncture it. This is because if it is punctured, the refrigerator is damaged and cannot be repaired.

Using a flat blade screwdriver, push down on the coil enough to slide the ice maker off the top of the coil.

Step 6

Remove the ice maker by pressing the top locking clip, pulling the ice maker forward and down slightly. This comes off the casing.

Before installing the new ice maker, make sure the two slots on the top of the ice maker align with the two tabs on the roof of the ice maker compartment.

Step 7

Be sure to lower the chute tray at the bottom of the ice maker. Now, insert the cooling coil through the back of the ice maker. Next, push the ice maker until the locking tab on the top clicks and locks into place.

When it locks into place, push up on the duct tray so it locks into place. Now, install the screw that you removed earlier.

Step 8

Reconnect the wire harness and push the wires toward the side of the ice maker compartment. Replace the cable housing cover by gently pushing and sliding it in.

Next, reinstall the Philips screw that you removed earlier. Replace the ice tray. Push it until it locks into place.

Step 9

Plug the refrigerator back into the outlet or turn on the circuit breaker if you turned it on before. Next, give the ice maker time to cool properly and make ice. This may take up to 12 hours. Then check if it works as it should.
