How to Handle It When a Roommate Wants to Move Out Early

There are a lot of things that you should discuss and write down in a roommate agreement before you and someone else decide to move in with one another. It can seem overkill to have this big agreement in place, but it can avoid fighting or trying to figure out some of the big stuff later on when you are tired or emotional about it. While you should take the time to discuss the rent and how much everyone will pay and even a bit about the other bills, another thing to consider discussing and writing down in your roommate agreement includes what happens if someone has to move out early for some reason.

Things can happen in life and it is possible that one roommate will need to leave an apartment unit early or before the lease is done. Or maybe you and the other person just didn’t get along as roommates and weren’t able to work things out, even with the roommate agreement. This happens, even though it can be frustrating. You just need to have the right expectations listed out ahead of time so that both parties know what to expect if one of them move out. Some of the things to hash out in your roommate agreement includes:

# How much notice you need to give to the other people in the unit.

# Do you need to be the one who finds a new roommate to move in before you can move out? Can you afford to have one of the rooms in the apartment vacant at any time?

# When will the security deposit be returned?

Money is always one of the biggest issues when a roommate decides to move out and it can put the others in a bind. Make sure that you discuss how this will be handled and what you should do if one or more roommates needs to move out early. This can avoid a lot of problems later on when the situation does happen.

Whether you want to move in with a roommate or not, it is a good idea to have some ground rules in place from the start.
