Will Having a Lot of Credit Cards Help Improve My Credit?

Your credit score is a number that many lenders will use to figure out how much money it is safe to loan out to you. It is often based on the way that you were able to handle your debt in the past. If you are good at paying back your debt on time, then you are more likely to get the loan that you are looking for. Simply having one, or many, credit cards will not be enough to increase your score.

The reporting agencies will also look at something known as the credit utilization rate. This rate is going to depend on the amount of your credit limit that you are using at any given time. You want this to be as low as possible, or your credit score will take a nosedive as well. If you are able to pay off the credit card at the end of each billing period, then your credit card utilization will be lower.

What most credit card companies will look for when it comes t your report is a healthy relationship with credit over a long period of time. You need to be able to prove that you are able to use your credit card, that you don’t abuse the use of it, and that you keep the card on you for many years.

The tricky part in all of this is that the reporting agencies do not like it when they see you using too much of your available credit. The ideal number is for you to only use 30% of your credit limit at a time, though 10% will help bump your score up even more. At the same time, the bank who gave you the credit card is working hard to tempt you to spend more money and use up your limit, thanks to some of the rewards and points that you use, so it can become a vicious cycle that is hard for you to break. This is why one credit card is often too much to have.
