When you move into a new apartment, you need to get into a good budget to make sure you have a plan in place for you to be in control the whole time. You will find that the zero-based budget is going to be a good choice. It helps you to be in control of every dollar that you have and is the best way to reach all of your financial goals along the way. There are a few different steps that you can take to do a zero-based budget, but the first one is to list out your monthly income so you know how much you have to work with to start.

There are a few different ways that you can go through and list out your income. You can start this with a sheet of paper and pen to get it done. But using an app can help automate it a bit more and will help you out. The budgeting apps will handle the math, show you if you are spending too much money at the same time, and will make it easier to reach some of your financial goals at the same time.

As you are doing this, you need to figure out what is going to count as income. You will need to do a regular paycheck along with anything else that you plan to bring in during the month, like what you may make from your side hustle or from a second job. You need to write it all down and then add it up to see how much you bring in for the month. This is the number you are going to use if you are setting up the zero-based budget.

If you have an income that changes from one month to the next, such as being self-employed or working in sales, then you will need to average out your income for the year and then use that. Or you can go with your lowest month to be safe. You can add extra money to savings on the good months to help with that.
