Kohli, who missed the England Test series for personal reasons, is set to make his comeback in the IPL 2024. The IPL will be immediately followed by the T20 World Cup in June, to be played in the West Indies and the USA.
On Tuesday, a report in The Telegraph made some shocking revelations about the thought process of the BCCI officials and selectors regarding Kohli. The report said that “Virat Kohli is not a certainty for the showpiece event in the US and the West Indies in June, “and that the selectors are ready to “take some harsh” for the marquee ICC event of the year.
The chief reason for the selectors’ reported decision to omit Kohli from the T20 World Cup is believed to be that “the slow wickets in the West Indies wouldn’t suit him.” The head of the selection committee, Ajit Agarkar, is said to have spoken with Kohli about his strike rate in T20 cricket as well, saying that “only a superlative effort from Kohli in the IPL could force a change in plans.”.
If Kohli is indeed not on the plane to the USA for the mega-tournament, it would be a massive miss, both for the ICC and the broadcasters, as he’s their main selling point.
Angry fans blasted the BCCI, the selectors, and the team management as soon as this report was published.

Even England’s legendary pacer Stuart Broad couldn’t believe this news. Broad tweeted: “This can’t be true. Just from a fans point of view of growing the game, the ICC putting games on in America, India Vs Pakistan in New York, Virat is the biggest draw of any player in the world, I’m sure he will be selected”
Kohli is the leading run scorer in the history of the T20 World Cup. He averages 81 in 25 innings in the tournament, with a whopping 14 half-centuries to his name. He is the only player to be twice named Player of the Tournament in T20 World Cup history.
