Asian Queer Icons

Body

May is the official Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage month. Meanwhile, June is pride month. It's a back-to-back opportunity to celebrate the Asian queer icons who grace television, music, activism, and politics. It's a great time to meet people through Asian LGBTQ personals while learning more about the most visible faces in this community. If you are looking for Asian LGBTQ personals, visit this website.

While there are plenty of accomplished Asian queers in the world, here are some of the most recognizable!

Margaret Cho

If you're a fan of comedy, you're no stranger to Margaret Cho. She's been in the limelight for the past three decades, working on many film and television projects. The Korean comedian is most known for her stand-up shows.

She still performs and has earned many accolades. She often addresses intersectionality and the unique situations she experiences as an openly bisexual Korean living in America.

Sutan Amtrull (Raja)

Sutan Amrull, better known by their stage name of Raja, is an accomplished drag queen and makeup artist. Sutan grew up in Indonesia before moving to the United States at nine years old.

Sutan's career began as a makeup artist for big names like Tyra Banks, Dita Von Teese, Pamela Anderson, and more. He even appeared on America's Next Top Model.

However, Sutan is most known as his drag alter-ego, Raja. Raja won the third season of Rupaul's Drag Race and appeared on Rupaul's Drag Race All-Stars season 7 more than a decade later.

George Takei

Younger generations might know George Takei for his comedic take on current affairs on Twitter. But this openly gay Japanese actor is most recognizable as Hikaru Sulu on the Star Trek TV series.

Before that, George Takei was a survivor of Japanese internment camps during World War II. Since his run as Sulu, George Takei wrote many books and became a vocal political activist.

Alexander Wang

Alexander Wang is a Tawainese-American designer who rose to superstardom in the late aughts. After attending the prestigious Parsons School of Design in New York for two years, Alexander left to start his brand. His first collection debuted in 2007 to critical acclaim.

The openly gay designer eventually got support from Vogue editor Anna Wintour, and the rest is history! He served as the creative director for Balenciaga and has a wildly successful brand that continues to make waves in the fashion industry.

Those are just a few notable Asian queer icons. Whether you're meeting others through Asian LGBTQ personals or simply want to learn more about the contributions of queer Asians, there are plenty more icons worth exploring.
