How to Transfer Your Vehicle Registration when Moving to Queensland

Posted By Ian Baker     July 5, 2022

Body

When moving to Queensland with the intent to stay longer than 14 days, you must transfer the registration of your vehicle to Queensland. Individuals with vehicles that remain registered in another state or territory, but remain garaged in Queensland, are at risk of being fined.

When registering your vehicle in Queensland, you are required to get a roadworthy certificate, which our team here at Totally Mobile Roadworthy are more than happy to assist you with!

Individuals who own light vehicles can choose from 1, 6 or 12 registration, whereas owners of heavy vehicles have a 3-month registration option. The single month option is available by direct debit only. You must go in person for the initial registration in Queensland, however, after that, you can renew registration online, or by phone.

How to transfer your registration

There are three simple steps involved in transferring your vehicle registration in Queensland.

First, ensure that you are covered by a current compulsory third party insurance (CTP insurance) to be able to drive the vehicle to obtain your registration transferred. This can be your existing interstate CTP Insurance.

Next, book your vehicle in with Totally Mobile Roadworthy for a safety check. We can come to you, making it much more convenient than going to an assessment centre.

Finally, once you have obtained a roadworthy certificate, go in-person to a Transport and Main Roads customer service centre with all the required documents.

Getting a refund for your previous state or Territory registration

When registering your vehicle in Queensland, you can apply to receive a refund on the remaining part of your interstate registration. To do this, you need to hand in your interstate plates and provide a current Queensland safety certificate to a transport and motoring customer service centre.

Once you have transferred vehicle registration to Queensland, you are required to cancel the registration from your previous state or territory. You then can apply for the refund discussed above.
