Scales can suffer from an effect called "drift". Drift is when your scale is working fine, but the measurements are not exactly the same every day. why not? Factors such as temperature can affect the elasticity of the materials used to build the scale. If the weather is colder, the spring and load gauge may not bend the same amount and will give different readings.

    As far as testing your electronic body fat scale, here are the steps you can take.

    First, make sure you zero the scale correctly. A digital scale can be zeroed in some way, whether it's an action like stomping and stomping, or a button that can be pressed to reset it.

    For mechanical scales, there might be something as simple as a dial that you can turn to make sure it reads zero before stepping on it. With other scales, you may need to open it up and turn something inside to make the same adjustment.

    By the way, you want to calibrate or zero the scale every time you use it. With proper calibration, home scales can be used very accurately for weight monitoring. However, if you move the scale, it will need to be recalibrated. Typically, you'll also want to calibrate every two months, just in case. If in doubt, go to zero!

Make sure you're stepping on it the same way, and that you're not bouncing, moving, or otherwise adjusting your weight distribution while you're testing it. If you're sure your scale is consistent, then you can try testing it with something of a known weight. We like to use small hand weights like these that have a known weight written on the side. You want to use something like 10 pounds or so. Some scales will not "activate" the lighter weights because of how they are calibrated internally.
