Learn Amigurumi Crochet for Beginners

Body

Amigurumi is the Japanese art of crocheting shapes and toys. Amigurumi projects are cute and fun to make, but if you don't know how to crochet, you need to learn. The special crochet project requires a pattern, your trusted crochet hooks, yarn to go with and accessories. It is always recommended to understand the working of basic crochet stitches, especially single crochet stitches and crocheting in rounds. You’ll be making the exterior of an object while filling will shape the project.

A pattern is the most important ingredient in making the Amigurumi crochet project. A designer instructs the steps of making the object and unlike sweaters, shawls, blankets and other projects, a miscalculation of even one stitch can change the entire look, the bunny you might be crocheting may have a loopy ear or the pumpkin you were making might look misshapen.

So, let’s get started.

Step 1: Gather Tools & Materials

  • Crochet Hook - After the pattern, the most important tool for Amigurumi projects is crochet hooks. A pattern will mention the crochet hook sizes, you may need different sizes for different sections of the project. Each crochet hook is labeled with a letter and/or the size in mm. As Amigurumi demands tight crochet stitches, make sure to use a comfortable crochet hook with easy stitch making.
  • Yarn - The type/size of yarn is always listed on the pattern. Fun and bright colors are recommended as you’ll be making creative objects that are toys for kids or used to decorate homes, etc. Also, make sure that you have good quality yarn, avoid wool and cotton, and go for the blends.
  • Accessories & Notions - Crochet accessories assist with making your project neat and fun. Most Amigurumi patterns require crocheting in rounds, it can be difficult to see where a round starts and ends. By using a safety pin or a stitch marker, you can mark the first stitch of each round to keep track of where you start and finish each round. It is also recommended to have a finishing needle, repair hook, and even an accessory holder to have all your notions nearby. A blunt finishing needle will weave in the yarn ends and assist in adding buttons, eyes, and more accessories to the crochet project.
  • 100% Polyester Fiber Fill - In most cases, you will need to stuff your Amigurumi Crochet project to give it a shape. 100% Polyester fiber fill is the best material to use. Even when you need to wash and dry your project, polyester does not retain water.

Step 2: Slip Knot, Chain Stitch, Terms & Abbreviations

After gathering all supplies start with a slip knot. You can alternatively be instructed to start with a magic loop. Most Amigurumi crochet projects will require knowledge about how to make a Magic Ring. The ring of stitches works on a loose adjustable loop. For crochet beginners, the method might look fiddly but once you master the technique you’ll have beautiful round crochet without a hole in the middle.

If you need to slip knot, then pick the yarn, make sure to keep a 6-10 inch tail. Pinch the yarn between your fingers and create a loop and place it on the crochet hook. Pull both ends of the yarn (one leading to the ball and the tail) so that knot sits snug on the hook. After the secure stitch on the crochet hook, chain a number of stitches.

Step 3: Crochet Stitches: Single, Increase, Decrease

After the magic ring or the chain, continue as instructed. Single crochet stitches (SC), Half Double Crochet, and Double Crochet are used to make a dense fabric. Follow the steps to the word.

Once you are done with the exterior and interior filling, with a finishing needle weave in the yarn ends.
