13 million MapleStory players at an increased risk after hack – casting a shadow over Nexon’s IPO

If you’re planning to float your game company about the stock exchange, probably a final thing you want is for just a hacker to break in to the MapleStory 2 Mesos personal information some 13 million of one's players.

But that’s precisely what has happened to South Korean firm Nexon, which runs the massively-popular MMORPG “MapleStory”.

A statement on Nexon’s website (in Korean), “apologises sincerely” to have an intrusion on its backup database on 18 November, that this firm revealed on the Korea Communications Commission (KCC) earlier today.

The stolen data included players’ names, user ids, resident registration plate (the equivalent to some social security number) and password. Fortunately, passwords and resident registration plate information have been proved to have already been encrypted – though the firm remains to be advising players to test that they were not using exactly the same password on other websites.

It appears that only info on South Korean game users was exposed, but if you consider that South Korea carries a total population of 49 million people, you have a feel for how significant a haul on the details of 13 million ones could be.

A spokesman for that KCC is reported as saying that there'll be a complete investigation into whether Nexon was negligent which consists of customers’ information that is personal.

The hack incorporates spectacularly bad timing for Nexon, that are planning to IPO. According to VentureBeat, the corporation acknowledges that one on the risks it faces is just one of hacking.

How very prescient of which.

Nexon, as well as Maple Story game, aren’t the sole online sites in South Korea to own suffered in the hands of hackers, naturally. Earlier this current year, hackers broke in to the popular South Korean websites Nate and Cyworld, and stole information regarding 35 million social media users.

Websites want to do a much better job of protecting their users’ information. If they don’t, this may not you need to be the customers who're put vulnerable or inconvenienced – corporate coffers can also begin to have the pain too. MMOAH is capable of providing a better service for MS 2 Mesos trading. We have provided service for thousands and thousands of players in all over the world.
